Southampton fear United backlashSouthampton’s 27-year stay in the top flight could be ended by a Manchester United backlash according to Claus Lundekvarm.
Saints must beat United at St Mary’s on Sunday and hope Norwich fail to win at Fulham if they are to have any hope of avoiding relegation.
Defender Lundekvam said: “I was hoping United would win to make our job a bit easier.
“They won’t want to finish the season with two successive defeats, especially with the FA Cup final against Arsenal on the horizon.
“So getting beaten by Chelsea has not done us any favours.
“Had they won, Alex Ferguson might have been tempted to rest a couple of players, but I don’t expect that to be the case now.
“We couldn’t have picked a tougher game — but that is what football is all about so we just have to get on with it.”
