Liverpool bid for French star

BBC Sport has reported that Liverpool have failed in a bid to sign Roma's French international defender Phillipe Mexes.

The Reds are thought to have made four attempts to sign the 23-year-old centre-half, either on loan or as a permanent deal.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti wants to keep the French defender, who joined the Serie A club on a four-year deal last summer from French club Auxerre.
