Speaking to The Journal the Republic of Ireland international said: "I had to move for my game. If you had a football brain, you could see that. But it did ruin my summer. I loved every minute of my time at Chelsea. I was roaring crying when I left.
"Jose told me he didn't want me to go. If I had two or three years left on my contract, then he wouldn't have let me go. But I had to."
