Addicks close in on Chelsea starRussian international midfielder Alexei Smertin is close to leaving the Premiership champions for a year-long loan at London rivals Charlton.
Smertin struggled for first-team football last season, making just 16 league appearances and most of them as a substitute.
He told the BBC Russian Service website: "The last two months of last season at Chelsea were painful for me because I'm not used to sitting on the bench,
There were other offers, but I wanted to stay in London. My family is settled here and it is a fantastic city."
