Sydney FC goes into finals in winning formSydney FC goes into the inaugural Hyundai A-League semi finals as the only winning team after a scintillating opening to the final round tapered off with some drab, meaningless matches.
Sydney FC’s 2-1 victory over Adelaide United was a great advertisement for the A-League as the two teams staged the third epic encounter throughout the regular season.
Goals, action, passion and atmosphere; the match had everything, including an A-League record crowd of 25,557 at Aussie Stadium.
The result cemented Sydney FC into second place and made the following three matches over the weekend academic as Newcastle and Central Coast had already claimed 3rd and 4th.
As it was, neither team could win with the Central Coast battling to a 2-2 draw against a 10 man Queensland Roar and Newcastle copping another hammering at home, this time going down 3-1 to Perth Glory.
Adelaide obviously went down 2-1 to Sydney FC leaving them as the only team that goes into the semi finals in winning form.
Of course, all that counts for nothing on Friday when the semi finals series starts.
One thing that did stay alive was the race to win the A-League’s “Golden Boot”, which finished in a four-way tie between Alex Brosque, Stewart Petrie, Bobby Despotovski and Archie Thompson.
