Deflated Rovers rue missed chancesBlackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes has expressed his disappointment following the 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen which eliminated the club from the UEFA Cup.
"We made too many errors over the course of the two games unfortunately, and that is why we have gone out of the competition," said Hughes.
"We've had a real effort in the second half, we threw a lot of players forward and just needed a break at the right time.
"A couple of gilt-edged chances that we needed to put away. Had we scored one of those chances I think we would have gone on and very comfortably won the tie.
"We just couldn't get the goal that our second half performance deserved."
Hughes was also critical of the referee after he allowed Bayer to wind the clock down during the tie. He said: "Time wasting is part and parcel of the European game. It's used by many clubs,"
"The referee needed to be stronger in that respect.
"I was more disappointed in the referee that he allowed it to happen for so long. We need to learn from that.
"They also had players diving theatrically and stopping the game.
"That is what Leverkusen wanted at that stage of the game."
He added: "It's not to be this year, but we've got to work really hard from now until the end of the season to make sure we are in the competition next year hopefully,"
"We've enjoyed the European campaign, it has been good for us and good for the development of the team and the squad.
"We've struggled of late because of the injuries we've had, but overall we'll learn from this and be a better team."
"We've had a real effort in the second half, we threw a lot of players forward and just needed a break at the right time.
