Slater backs Sydney FCFormer Australian star Robbie Slater says it is too early to write off Sydney FC despite the club's slow start to the Hyundai A-League season.
Tipped as the team to beat in the inaugural season of the Australian competition, Sydney has won just one of its three matches so far and suffered a surprise 1-2 loss to Newcastle on Sunday.
But former Socceroo Slater says Sydney FC and its coach Pierre Littbarski should be given more time before they are written off.
"They are still a good side," Slater told The Australian. "They have some quality players and can certainly turn things around very quickly. Yes, they have some problems but, for me, they are good ones."
"One problem is that they have three quality strikers - Dwight Yorke, Sasho Petrovski and David Zdrilic - but three into two spots doesn't go. And it is the same in midfield where they have five players competing for four spots."
Littbarski did not start star striker Yorke on the pitch, after he returned from international duty with Trinidad and Tobago, and Slater said he would have acted differently.
"I don't know the full circumstances, but I think it was a better option to play Yorke from the start," Slater added. "He showed when he came on that he was firing and the team looked better when he was out there."
