Former Spurs favourite wins £2millionFormer Tottenham and Southampton star Dean Richards has won a record £2million insurance payout after doctors told him he had to retire or risk suffering a fatal brain haemorrhage.
The defender secured the bumper windfall from city firm AON Limited yesterday.
Richards’ £40,000-a-week deal with Spurs was cancelled when he retired midway through last season on a specialist’s advice.
But due to an insurance clause covering personal disablement and illness, the England B star successfully claimed for half his projected loss of earnings.
Richards said: “I appreciate this is a large sum of money and it will secure my family’s financial future.
“Football has been my life for as long as I can remember and the pleasure and fulfilment that being a professional footballer gave me has left a huge gap in my life that cannot be replaced.
“No amount of money can compensate for this loss.”
